A Bit of Gov. John deJongh Jr.'s 2008 State of the Territory Address
Our ongoing public-private efforts to continue the redevelopment of Frederiksted will, we feel, make Frederiksted the entry port to St. Croix for an ever increasing flow of cruise ship passengers. These efforts, which I am confident will be successful, will lead to new opportunities for local businesses to develop the land-based attractions critical to growing this industry in Frederiksted and throughout the island. This overall activity is consistent with the estimated construction activity for St. Croix based on 2007 permits which are up by $25 million compared to 2006, and higher than St. Thomas' activity by $67 million.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Frederiksted announced plans to renovate the church's rectory on Hospital Street into a new community center and on Feb. 4 will dedicate the building in honor of well-known Frederiksted resident, newspaper columnist and horse racing enthusiast Clarence "Cherra" Heyliger, who died last year.

The Rev. Edward Thompson, the pastor of St. Paul's, said the church will be launching a fundraising drive to begin renovations to the 19th-century Danish structure at 20 Hospital Street, which has been in disrepair for years. The estimated cost of the renovations is $200,000. He said the church also is seeking grant funding through V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources.

AmeriCorps volunteers lead cleanup of Frederiksted beach in honor of King
By Fiona Stokes-Gifft for the VI Daily News, Jan 22, 2008
More than 20 young people took to a portion of the island's west shore on Monday to volunteer their time to clean up the area.

The AmeriCorps members from Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands started the cleanup at Fisher Street Fish Market in Frederiksted and picked up trash and other debris along the waterfront area all the way to Dorsch Beach. (Daily News Photo by Cristian Simescu)

AmeriCorps Volunteers Lead Cleanup of Frederiksted Beach in Honor of KingThe Day of Service was selected for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and is one of the requirements for the group.

Judith Velasquez, AmeriCorps coordinator at Lutheran Social Services, said the members chose the Frederiksted Beach project because of their concern for the environment. She said they considered other service projects, but the cleanup was one that they thought had the most appeal because its impact will be immediate and long-lasting.

Cruise line commits two cruise ship calls to St. Croix in 2009
Government Press Release: January 10, 2008
fsted.com

As part of the continued effort by the deJongh / Francis Administration to attract more cruise ships to the island of St. Croix, Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. has received confirmation from Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines of two ship visits: on Sunday, February 8, and Monday, March 16, 2009.

The 700-passenger ship, Journey, is operated by one of RCCL’s sister companies, Azamara Cruise Lines. “The cruise visits have resulted from a redeployment of the ship,” deJongh said, adding, “We continue to meet with the major cruise line operators and express to them our desire to see more cruise ship passengers visit St. Croix, a destination that is on the right path to receive more cruise passenger visits.”

The announcement of the two port calls follows a decision by Disney Cruise Lines to add St. Croix to its Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries beginning in 2009.

St. Croix will see its next cruise ship call on January 16 when Holland America’s “Westerdam” brings the Blues Festival to the island during a daytime visit.

Records broken at the fourth annual Dolphins Sea Swim
St Croix Dolphins Swim TeamOn Sunday January 6th, 2008, the St. Croix Dolphins Swim Team hosted their 4th Annual Sea Swim. It was a perfect day for the race with a light breeze, clear skies and included many record-breaking swims. This 1-mile swim was open to swimmers of all ages and abilities and included swimmers from the Virgin Islands, Italy and twenty-three states.

The race started at the Frederiksted Pier and finished at Rainbow Beach. It included seven swimmers under the age of 10 all the way up to eleven swimmers age 50 and older. Many of the higher finishes were recorded by swimmers from the College of the Holy Cross from Massachusetts and Fordham University in New York City. This year’s event had forty more entries than in 2007 largely due to the success of the past three races.
