Landmark initiative with Diageo for Captain Morgan Rum Distillery on St. Croix Passes with 10-5 vote
Captain MorganIn a 10-5 vote, the VI Senate ratified a 30-year agreement between the government and Diageo PLC to build a new Captain Morgan rum distillery on St. Croix.

The agreement, announced last month by Gov. John deJongh Jr., will bring production of the second-largest rum brand in the United States to the Virgin Islands and is projected to be worth close to $3 billion in new revenue for the Virgin Islands over the life of the deal.

The new facility will produce bulk rum beginning in 2011. Beginning in 2012, the distillery will supply all bulk rum used to make Captain Morgan branded products for the United States. Captain Morgan is a global leader among premium spirits and is the second leading rum consumed in the world, with steady growth expected in the coming years. It is estimated that the environmentally sound, state of the art distillery will have capacity to distill up to 20 million proof gallons per year. This 30-year commitment will provide a major economic stimulus for the entire Territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Click here for full press release!

From St. Croix Source

Mario MooreheadCrowds filled King Street in Frederiksted across from Buddhoe Park to celebrate the 160th anniversary of Emancipation, hear keynote speaker Rev. Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam and pay homage to the efforts and sacrifices of St. Croix's enslaved forebears.

Festivities were opened by Betty Wilson and Pamela Richards of the History Culture and Tradition Foundation, along with Frederiksted musician Wilfred "Juni Bomba" Allick blowing a call on conch shells, as Emancipation leader Moses "General Buddhoe" Gottlieb and his lieutenants did July 3, 1848, calling the island's laborers to arms by a pre-arranged signal.

Myron Jackson of the Virgin Islands Cultural Heritage Institute performed a libation, a traditional African ceremony, pouring plain water from Creque spring on the ground while offering a prayer to African ancestors in Yoruba and English.

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. was advised Tuesday by officials of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL) that it has included St. Croix on the itineraries of two of its ships beginning next year.

Royal CaribbeanWe have been in discussions with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines since early last year on the potential and attractiveness of the St. Croix market as a scheduled destination. These discussions have included the V.I. Port Authority and the West Indian Company, Limited. After a site visit by RCCL in October, I am extremely pleased with this positive step forward."

In announcing its 2009-2010 Caribbean Cruise season, Royal Caribbean committed two ships to St. Croix including the popular "Adventure of the Seas" which will call year-round every other week and the "Serenade of the Seas" cruise liner," deJongh said. The governor further said that this announcement, coupled with an earlier commitment by Disney Cruise Lines that it had added St. Croix to its schedule, is tremendous news for St. Croix and highlights his Administration’s ongoing efforts in working with the major cruise lines to provide regular cruise ship traffic to St. Croix, and diversify the visitor mix to the island to provide both economic stability and growth.
