Town meeting for the community of Williams Delight on August 30, 2009 at 4:00pm at the Williams Delight Community Center
The Office of Senator Craig W. Barshinger will host a town meeting for the community of Williams Delight on August 30, 2009 at 4:00pm at the Williams Delight Community Center.

The town meeting will provide residents of the community of Estate Williams Delight to discuss issues concerning road conditions and upcoming projects and opportunities with representatives from Public Works Department and V. I. Housing Authority.

New Tenants at the Fort Frederik Museum

2 employees from the Historic Preservation Office move into the second floor of the Fort Frederik Museum
This move makes "logistical and financial sense" said  V.I. State Historic Preservation Office Director Lorna Thomas.They no longer have to pay rent in the Mars Hill building, and savings will go directly towards maintaining the fort.

Cruise ship passengers can get a taste of Des Moines in the Virgin Islands.
Polly's at the Pier featured in the Des Moines Register. Lynn Hicks and David Elbert for the Des Moines Register wrote this article:

Steven Schawl, a former Des Moines designer, has opened a "coffee shop/Internet cafe/art gallery/design center" called Polly's at the Pier in Frederiksted, St. Croix. And he's ordering coffee beans from Zanzibar's Coffee Adventure in Des Moines.

Schawl used to visit Zanzibar's frequently and had trouble finding a comparable cup of joe when he moved to St. Croix two years ago. He has been ordering about 80 pounds a month but plans to increase his orders.

The Department of Tourism U.S. Virgin Islands Photo Contest features Frederiksted in 3 of the top 5 winning entries and St. Croix in 4 of the top 5.

Winning photo by Gavin PowellResidents were invited to enter photos for a chance to win the grand prize of $2,000 cash.

The winner of the contest was Gavin Powell.  His photo "Festival" was taken last year during the 2008-2009 Adult Crucian Festival Parade in Frederiksted.  The photo portrays a Hovesna troop member dancing to festive music.

Runner up was John Gordon.  His photo "Sunset at Sandy Point" portrays another of the west ends beautiful sunsets.

The winner of the ages 5-10 group was Jordan Swainson.  She photographed "Old Momma Tree Watching Over the Kids". Her photo is of a beautiful old tree overlooking the Frederiksted playground.

Other winners are Jai Thomas and Tristan Ewald.  Jai's "A Red and Green Mango" wins the ages 11-13 group and Tristan's "Island Time" wins the ages 14-17 group.

Frederiksted Veterans Park Dedicated

More than 50 people gathered Monday morning to witness the rededication of the veterans memorial park in Frederiksted in honor of longtime public servant Verne Richards

Richards committed his life to serving his community. He served as Veterans Affairs director and district commander of the American Legion and was an active member of Our Town Frederiksted, Frederiksted Festival Organization and St. Patrick's Church.

Housing Parks and Recreation Commissioner St. Claire Williams said during the ceremony that the project was collaboration of his department, the Public Finance Authority and the Office of Veterans Affairs.

many reasons why St. Croix and especially Frederiksted deserve to be recognized.  Bill wrote that "Frederiksted, where the island's cruise ship pier is located, usually has a slower pace and more of the feel of being in a real Caribbean town rather than a place made just for tourists".

Kossler continued with his recomendations to affordable options in Frederiksted and St. Croix.

Nekton Rorqaul Explained

A week of diving St. Croix
nekton RorqualYou probably have seen this vessel off the shores of Frederiksted or perhaps even at the pier.  Ask anyone what it is and they'll probably tell you it's a research vessel studying the algae plume!

Actually, it's a live aboard dive boat made specifically for diving.  Her name is the Nekton Rorqual and she visits weekly from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Frederiksted welcomes Polly's at the Pier Internet Cafe, the newest addition on Strand Street
Polly's at the Pier has so much going on!!  Owners Steven Schawl and Seth Wilcoxon recently opened their internet cafe right by the pier on 3 Strand St.  The new cafe is named after their English Bulldog Polly who sometimes makes personal appearances and is proudly displayed in a large portrait center stage above the service bar.

Two lifeguards save life of male cruise ship tourist.
Anthony Stevens and Akeem Stevens, Frederiksted lifeguards working at the Vincent Mason Jr. Coral Resort Pool, resuscitated a cruise ship tourist who experienced difficulty while swimming from a boat to the beach on Saturday.

FSTED.com recognizes the brave efforts of these two individuals who used their training and talent to save a life.  Their focus and commitment should stand as an inspiration to all.
